A History of God

I’m reading a book right now that is causing me to think and to struggle. (Isn’t that what reading is about anyway?) The book is entitled A History of God. It’s written by a former nun, Karen Armstrong, and is not a Christian book, but more of a philosophy of religion book. In the introduction, Ms. Armstrong states, “This book will not be a history of the ineffable reality of God itself, which is beyond time and change, but a history of the way men and women have perceived him fom Abraham to the present day” (p. xx). The subtitle is, “The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.” I’m about a third of the way through it–it’s a slow read. It’s also a New York Times bestseller. …[read more]
